Workout Motivation: How to Get it (and Keep It)

September 10, 2022

Motivation can be hard to come by, especially when working out. Maybe you’re just starting out and trying to establish a workout routine, or maybe you’ve been working out for a while but have recently hit a plateau. Either way, it can be tough to stay motivated throughout your fitness journey.

Workout Motivation Tips and Strategies

So how do you get (and keep) workout motivation? Here are a few tips:

Find Your Why

What is your reason for wanting to work out? Whether it’s to lose weight, gain muscle, improve your health, or simply feel good, it’s important to know your “why”. When you have a clear purpose for working out, staying motivated is easier.

To discover your why, start by asking yourself some questions:

  • Why do I want to work out?
  • What are my fitness goals?
  • How will working out make me feel?

Set Small Goals

Don’t try to overhaul your entire health and fitness routine overnight. Set small, achievable goals that you can slowly work towards. For example, if weight loss is important to you, you might set a goal to lose one or two pounds per week. Or if building strength is your priority, you could set a goal to increase the weight you can lift each month.

Other examples of your fitness goals could be:

  • Complete a 5K race
  • Do a pull-up
  • Run for 30 minutes straight
  • Cycle for 50 miles

Find a Workout Buddy

A workout buddy can help keep you accountable and motivated. Find someone with similar fitness goals as you and commit to working out together regularly.

Mix Things Up

Getting bored with your workout routine? Then it’s time to mix things up. Trying new workout activities, adding variety to your exercises, and changing up your workout schedule can all help keep you motivated.

Here are some unique exercise ideas you might incorporate into your routine:

  • Hiking
  • Rock climbing
  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Yoga
  • Kickboxing

Take Rest Days

Rest days are just as important as workout days. You’re more likely to get burned out and quit when you’re constantly going full throttle. Be sure you schedule in some rest days into your workout routine. This will give your body time to recover and prevent injuries.

Reward Yourself

After reaching a fitness goal, reward yourself! This will help create a positive association with working out and help keep you motivated to continue reaching for your goals.

Try Group Fitness Classes

Group fitness classes in San Antonio are a fun way to work out and meet new people. The social atmosphere can be motivating, and you’ll likely push yourself harder than you would if you were working out alone.
